Welcome to Highland Books
Thanks for visiting us online! We've been selling books in Western North Carolina since 1975. That's a lot of books! We're proud to be independent booksellers, and indeed one of the largest independents in North Carolina. Brevard is a very special place; it's the special people here who have supported us for so long that we want to thank for keeping us in this community. Visit us in person, or online, to see the new books and Fair Trade gifts we offer; we'll look forward to seeing you!
Be sure to check the schedule for the Bag Lunch Series at the TRANSYLVANIA COUNTY LIBRARY! They have a wonderful lineup of authors this spring and summer, and we'll be there to provide the books after the presentations.
Feb. 21: Mark Schweizer (Liturgical Comic Mysteries)
March 20: Me! (Peggy Hansen -- Transylvania Memories)
April 17: Tim Spira (Wildflowers & Plant Communities of So. Appal.)
June 19: Carolyn Sakowski (Touring Backroads of WNC)

Author Program: CAROLYN SAKOWSKI, author of TOURING THE WNC BACKROADS, was here to introduce the new, updated edition of her wonderful book that we have used many times when we drive through the mountains. She spoke and showed slides from the book, and anyone who enjoys sightseeing and learning about our mountain heritage will enjoy this book.
And here's our bestselling book:
TRANSYLVANIA MEMORIES by Peggy Hansen
When we moved to Transylvania County 35 years ago, I fell in love with the mountains and the mountain people. I've always thought about writing a book about the long-time residents of Transylvania County and finally did it! I decided to present their stories in the form of "oral history," so the 20 people that I interviewed are allowed to speak in their own voices. They each tell their story of growing up here in the 1920s and 1930s, so we hear about early farm life, getting around before cars were in use, growing all a family's own food, early doctors and photographers in the county, school and church life, and much more.
I'm thankful that I finally undertook this project and was able to record the stories of these wonderful folks who have so much to share with us.
-- Peggy Hansen
BOOKS BOOKS BOOKS are coming in every day! We'll always be a bookstore
first and foremost, BUT look at what else we offer!
We regularly receive new items in our Fair Trade Department
including jewelry, scarves, bags, home decor, and holiday ornaments and nativities from Ten Thousand
Villages and other Fair Trade partners. Due to overwhelming customer requests, we've expanded that department so that you can find all your favorite worldwide crafts and accessories right here in Brevard!
BARGAIN BOOKS are now available to you at Highland Books! We've always had a few of these beautiful, hardback gift books, usually full color volumes in categories of art, travel, cooking, gardening, transportation, history, and more. Due to their popularity (beautiful books at GREAT PRICES!), we're bringing in more and more for you to choose from. They are mixed in with the books in each section of the store, but they are easy to spot because they have a bright neon-orange sticker on the spine of the book. ______________________________________________________________________________________ |
